About Beyond the Helmets

This started as race-day questions from the back seat, not a content plan.

Watching F1 with my kids, the lap times and strategy calls were never what actually grabbed them. It was always "who's that one," "why does he look so serious," "does she have pets" — the driver as a person, not a name on a leaderboard. And once you start noticing, it's genuinely all over the place: some drivers are obsessive animal people, some are dead serious about nothing but the race, some have this whole other life you'd never guess from a podium interview. That's a much better hook for a kid than tyre degradation.

So that's what we dig into — the off-track lives of Formula 1 and MotoGP riders, past and present. What pets do they keep? Where do they actually live? What do they eat, collect, listen to, or obsess over when they're not inside a car or on a bike? These are the stories that make riders and drivers feel like real people, not just helmet-wearing figures chasing tenths of a second.

It also became a way to talk about the drivers who came before — not just who's racing now, but who the sport's past champions and legends actually were as people, and what made them tick. Once that clicked for F1, it was obvious the same curiosity applies anywhere people watch a sport built around individual personalities under a helmet — which is why MotoGP riders started showing up here too, and won't be the last.
