Carlos Reutemann
Carlos Reutemann came within a single point of the 1981 Formula 1 world championship driving for Williams, one of the closest title fights in the sport's history. He went on to an entirely second career in Argentine politics, eventually becoming governor of his home province of Santa Fe.
Carlos Reutemann came from a farming family in Santa Fe, Argentina, before rising through South American and European motorsport to a Formula 1 career spanning Brabham, Ferrari, Lotus, and Williams. He won twelve Grands Prix across the 1970s and early 1980s and was a serious championship contender on several occasions.
His closest run at the title came in 1981 with Williams, when he arrived at the final race with a genuine chance of the championship, only for a subdued performance to let Nelson Piquet take the title by a single point — one of the tightest finishes in the sport's history and the defining near-miss of Reutemann's career.
After retiring from racing, Reutemann pursued a serious political career back in Argentina, twice winning election as Governor of his home province of Santa Fe and later serving as a national senator — a second act built on genuine public office rather than ceremonial involvement, unusual even among former world-class drivers.
5 Things You Might Not Know
Reutemann entered the final round of the 1981 season with a realistic shot at the title, but a disappointing race in the finale allowed Nelson Piquet to take the championship by a single point — one of the narrowest title margins in Formula 1 history, and the closest Reutemann ever came to the championship.
After his racing career, Reutemann entered Argentine politics and was twice elected Governor of Santa Fe, his home province, later also serving as a national senator — a genuinely unusual second act that gave him real political authority rather than a ceremonial post-racing role.
Reutemann had a reputation within the paddock for being brilliant on his best days and strangely off-form on others, with teammates and journalists of the era often remarking they could never fully predict which version of him would show up at a given Grand Prix.
Reutemann won twelve Grands Prix over a decade in Formula 1, driving for four different top teams, and was a championship contender on more than one occasion — a highly rated driver of his era even without the title to show for it.
Reutemann grew up on his family's farm in Santa Fe province, the descendant of German immigrants to Argentina — a background far removed from European racing culture that made his rise to Formula 1 front-runner status, and later to the governorship of that same province, a genuinely full-circle story.
